Vacuum filtration is a popular separating method to remove a solid from a liquid in modern labs. When we put the vacuum filtration into practice, the solution can be unsaturated, saturated, or supersaturated. The solid which will be separated is dissolved in a solution, and the solid concentration in the liquid is different. A vacuum filter is a device we can use to separate the solids from the liquid by forcing the liquid through the filter by vacuum from the vacuum pump.

Generally, we use vacuum filtration when collecting recrystallized solids. The particles dissolved in water or other solvents will be recovered and recrystallize by heating while the liquid is evaporated during the process of vacuum filtration.

We can also use vacuum filtration to separate solids from liquid solutions. Vacuum filtration is perfect for solutions with suspended particles. If the solutions are unsaturated with the solid dissolved in, some form of chemical treatment or heating is required before the process of vacuum filtration.

The amount of solid collected while vacuum filtrating is related to the pore size of the filter paper that is less than a micrometer in diameter. We may collect a few particles if the pore size of the filter paper is right though vacuum filtration is not suitable for saturated solutions.

This 47mm in-line holder (Model IFH47) is available in both type 316 stainless steel. The PTFE coated support screen prevents the sticking of the membrane during autoclaving. The back-pressure support screen protects the filter from rupture during reverse pressure surges. Upstream vent enables venting at any time during filtration. The dual sealing system compresses filter to ensure no lateral wicking/leaking. The locking ring enables filter changes without disconnecting from lines. Unit comes standard with silicone o-ring and FPM vent o-ring. When filtering gases, it is recommended that a second support screen be used upstream of the membrane. Replacement parts and alternate o-ring materials are available.

Applications:

  • Sterilize and ultraclean liquids and gases under positive pressure. Sterilize with membrane in place for microbiological studies.

The first sidearm flask functions as the vacuum trap and the second acts as the overflow back-up. These two flasks contain enough household bleach so that the final concentration of waste is 10% bleach when full. An in-line PTFE 0.2um filter is the last defense and prevents aerosols from entering the line. Buchner funnels are used in the laboratory for vacuum-assisted liquid filtering. In organic chemistry, these funnels are used to collect recrystallized compounds because they help remove moisture from the final product.


Buchner funnels consist of an open straight-sided cylindrical chamber that narrows to a tube- or pipe-shaped opening. The tube-like extension can be placed through a stopper, which is then placed into the top of a filtration or Buchner flask. Plastic versions may have a bung hole located at the side of the chamber to which a vacuum may be attached. Buchner funnels are reusable.


The bottom of the Buchner funnel chamber may be perforated or contain a separate fritted disc. Filter paper is used for Buchner funnels with perforated lower surfaces. Place the filter paper of the preferred porosity inside the chamber, pre-wet, add the liquid, and apply the vacuum.

Funnels with fritted glass discs do not require filter paper. The fritted glass will be porosity-rated as fine, coarse, medium, etc. Filtration with a Buchner funnel proceeds more quickly than letting the liquid flow simply using gravity. Most Buchner funnels are also rated for a maximum vacuum pressure.
